Concussion Special Wrap Up

What a wicked show we had last Monday! Wispy’s set was just incredible and he was a joy to interview. As the interview part was in Finnish, we thought that we would make a fast (and quite sloppy :P ) translation of it for all the people who are following our shows, but who are not that fluent in Finnish.

Here are the show and the interview in audible form:

And here’s the translation:

elysion: Hello Ville!

Wispy: Hello!

elysion: Thanks for coming to visit our show.

Wispy: No prob. Was nice coming. Apologies that the interview has to be done in Finnish, as my English is not that good.

elysion: No prob. You know I showed you the questions that I was going to ask you in this interview beforehand. Questions like “What got you into electronic music and blahblahblah”. These questions get asked in every interview, so I’ll just cut to the chase: According to a myth, the DJ gets all the women. Is this true?

Wispy: That is incorrect.

elysion: How about you M-za? Do DJ’s get all the women?

M-za: True!

elysion: Nononono, you got that very wrong! Anyways, let’s get to the point.

elysion: You are a part of the Plauge collective nowadays.

Wispy: Yes, that’s true.

elysion: You joined them some time ago. Isn’t it such a deal that you can’t just pay a membership fee and join it like that?

Wispy: No, you must be a real professional DJ. Not just anyone can join it. Only 12 DJs from Tampere are part of the collective.

elysion: How did you yourself end up there?

Wispy: Well, I was asked to join :) .

elysion: Plain and simple.

elysion: What do you think of the current state of electronic music and especially Jungle in Tampere? There hasn’t been that many events lately.

Wispy: Well, yeah, After the closing of Out Of Juice there has not been another place where events could be arranged. I’ve heard rumours that there are some new things coming though. For example “Kahvilla” in Tammela will start arranging some kind of small scale events.

elysion: You had the “Steps” club at Out Of Juice earlier. Any new projects in the making?

Wispy: Of course there are always new projects, but currently it is really difficult to find a sensible venue. Currently Klubi and Yo-talo are booked for at least half a year ahead so you must know well ahead if you want to get some artists there.

elysion: Familiar situation. Have bumped into that problem also while trying to organise something.

elysion: Plauge has its 8th anniversary party soon. Is there going to be something of interest to the breaks people?

Wispy: The party will be arranged together with Off the Hook’s 2nd anniversary so we will be having two stages at the event. The original idea was that I and e.g. milo will be playing there and our mission will be to drive the people to the dance floor via the bar. But we will still be playing good music there.

elysion: For sure.

elysion: I have been pondering on how to keep oneself up to date with the newest trends in the scene. Do you have any tricks on how to spot the newest and hottest releases?

Wispy: Well, Stealth Unit is probably the #1 place in Finland. I also check weekly the new releases from Beatport as well as try to listen to the Drum&Bass Arena Live broadcasts every Wednesday, which somewhat competes with this show.

elysion: Yeah, and of course loses!

Wispy: Yea.

Wispy: From the record stores in UK I usually check Redeye Records and Chemical Records. New records normally arrive on Thursday, so I try to get them ordered before others do.

elysion: Do you have any insight of what would be the next big thing in breakbeat? Currently dubstep is doing quite well, do you think there is something new coming?

Wispy: Well, I’m currently starting to produce music.

elysion: The next big thing: Wispy?

Wispy: Yeah, it’s going to be big!

Wispy: Well, I don’t really know what the next big thing could be. Dubstep is currently riding high, but I believe that it will start to go more and more into the mainstream, which is what also happened to jungle 4 or 5 years ago with Pendulum. After that it had a bit of a downwards slope but currently we are waiting for a new rise.

elysion: The situation of jungle shows quite well from the fact that Pendulum is starring at the next Provinssi Rock festival.

Wispy: Yeah, just heard about that today. Actually their new album is apparently more back to their roots. At least what I’ve understood. Something in similar to Another Planet and such.

elysion: I’ve heard a few tracks also and it really does sound like good material.

elysion: Many jungle and breaks DJs have moved to playing dubstep. Do you have any interest in dusbtep?

Wispy: I’ve bought, say from 5 to 10 dubstep tunes, so can’t say that I’m all that addicted, but there are a few nice things happening there. Still I’ve been mostly interested in the wobble / funnybass jungle – music that is a bit silly, nothing too serious. That’s what I’m also looking for in dubstep – really unscrupulous songs.

elysion: Something like the Meow Meow track that was played in the beginning of the show?

Wispy: Yeah, something like that.

elysion: Tracks to be taken very seriously.

elysion: Guess we’ll have to try to keep this interview quite brief so that our international listeners – or listener – doesn’t leave

Wispy: The other one of the listeners

elysion: Yeah, that’s still about 50% of our listeners.

elysion: Are there any new events / releases / anything you would like to promote here?

Wispy: Check out my myspace: http://myspace.com/djwispy. I’ll be playing at Redrum on 26th of March with Infekto and at Kahvila on 3rd and 24th of April. On Labour Day I have gig at MBar and on at mid May there will be the Helsinki Drum&Bass and Dubstep conference held in Helsinki.

elysion: The legendary Labour Day DNB Mashup at MBar. That has been a nice event in the past, definitely worth of checking out!

elysion: Ok, I guess that quite wraps it up then. Thanks for the interview and the nice set!

Wispy: You’re welcome.
