Drum & Bass – A Dying Breed?

While being away from my regular … for the weekend at a event organized by our company, I had a moment of spare time and I decided to put it into good use by browsing through the new releases available at various digital music stores. To my surprise (a very positive one) there have been quite a few nice releases coming out this summer / autumn, but this time I truly hit a stream of gold. While browsing the catalog at BeatPort I bumped into a really nice track called “Transition” by producers that have pleased my ears quite a bit lately: Octane, DLR and Survival. There was still one big “but”. The track was available only if you would purchase the whole album (Andy C – Nightlife 5). This wouldn’t have been such a loss as the album is actually quite a nice pack of quality tracks, but I’m glad I went to search for other stores where I could buy the tracks separately. And what did I find? 13 tracks of pure quality released by the legendary Renegade Hardware. Tracks from artists such as S.P.Y., Loxy, Resound, Raiden, etc. + of course the aforementioned trio Octane, DLR and Survival.

Now, at this point you might be wondering what the topic of this post is all about. Well, as some of you might already have guessed, the title of the release which features this awesomeness is called “Last of a Dying Breed”. I am not sure where the name comes from, but I sure hope that it does not refer to the glamorous style of music the contents represent. Digital Tunes is a nice store as it usually has quite nice discounts if you buy the whole release compared to buying individual tracks (tracks 13*1.5e, whole release 10e). It is just that rarely you find releases on which the majority of tracks are such that you wan’t to purchase them, but on this one, I’d buy nearly all of them in a flash!

There still is one big “but” in the purchase: the release is currently in pre-order state, so you’ll have to wait until next monday (11th October) before you can turn your money into gold… gold as in some of the best tracks released this year. The good thing about this: Concussion Show will be aired also on the same date and we will sure as hell play quite a few of the tracks on the release! So be sure to lock on next monday! Bunch of other great stuff coming up also, as we are planning special content for the show because of the Concussion event next weekend.

Check out the release at Digital Tunes and tune in on monday at 5pm GMT!

Concussion Fan Stuff

Holá!

As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve been busy lately promoting our upcoming party. As a part of that promotion we also made a few sassy t-shirts! As we made the design, we thought that it looked quite nice, so we ordered a few extra ones. So if you want to be the coolest guy / gal on the block, you might want to continue your search, but if you’re just looking for something different and original, you can get one of the shirts for a very modest 10e price (excl. shipping). Get in touch with us at conc...@gmail.com and tell which size you would like to get. Here’s the design:

The color of the shirt is plain black and the logo is printed in Patone orange.

Enough of Monday – here’s some Saturday: Concussion @ Laterna 16.10.2010

Concussion @ Laterna 16.10.2010 flyer | Guests: Vesicle (LIVE), Burma ; Residents: elysion, M-za, Stinks & VJ Dep

Concussion seems to lately have been a bit Monday centered. Let’s change that a bit and instead change the focus to Saturday instead… a very special Saturday that is. The day is (despite earlier announcements) 16th of October this year. That is the day it’s going down! SRSLY! The day when the Concussion Crew will take over Laterna with two very special guests! The first guest is a very special and talented Finnish dubstep duo, the second being an accomplished drum & bass entertainer.

The dubstep duo I’m referring to here is of course Vesicle. These guys have been producing deep and experimental vibes for a few years now and are receiving quite much well deserved recognition for them. For our party, the lads have promised to pack their gear and move it to the venue for a wicked, first time, live performance!

The second guest appearance at the party will be performed by Burma. This chap has been entertaining the Finnish club scene for over a decade with his energetic performances and ‘glue sniffing’ style of jump up selection, as he likes to put it. Burma is also known for co-hosting the Sighco Show on Basso Radio alongside Muffler. His set’s rarely leave anyone in the crowd cold and I’m sure that this time will not be an exception!

As it is a Concussion event, the Crew will be there to make sure there will be enough of bass pressure at the dance floors through out the night. Make sure you mark the date on your calendars, you don’t want to miss this one!

For more info on Vesicle and Burma, check out TheirSpaces:

Monday Mix: elysion – Event Horizon

Time for another edition of our Monday Mix series! This time we don’t have to promote sets from others, instead this is one of our own: Event Horizon by elysion.

The set is constructed of the tracks that I find most inspiring at the moment. These tracks are maybe not that straight forward and a bit difficult to grasp, but you will be greatly rewarded if you take some time to try and concentrate into all the different elements in the tracks. You might not get the tracks instantaneously – I should know, took me quite a while. But now that I’ve seen the beauty of them, I can’t stop listening to them!

Don’t know the exact genre they belong to and am not really that fond of compartmentalizing in general, but for a quick reference I’d describe them with words “deep” and “techy”.

“It’s the silence between the notes that makes the music”

What a Monday!

Was absolutely wicked last Monday spinning the dnb vibes on the show! So many great tracks and this time I guess the blends weren’t that bad either :) . If you missed the show or want a recap, check the player below:

http://soundcloud.com/concussion/concussion-show-dnb-w-elysion-m-za-nubreaks-com-on-2010-06-21/download

Had the Breaks Classic part at the end of the show same as last time. Guess last time the classic was not all that obvious and I was able to spare the beer money as no-one guessed the track right. This time though, my mate mk-ultra got the id right just seconds before I announced it. On the show I guess I said that no-one got it right, but that was because I didn’t check the IRC channels before the announcement. But anyway, Congrats Teemu, will buy you a beer (or some alternative beverage) when we meet next time!

Concussion Tech Tips pt. 2

I made a post some time ago about the podcast thing I created on the site. I’ve been using it quite much since then and bumped into one a bit larger problem with it. Luckily I was able to find a simple solution to the problem and I thought I’d share it here with you.

So first the problem: The people who have been testing the system have probably noticed that the Beatport releases don’t have anything in the url to identify the track, which makes purchasing them a bit, well, difficult. There still is a way to find the track from Beatport by using the id number on the url. This id is the last number in the url before the ‘LOFI.mp3′ part. When you concatenate this with the url  ’http://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/track/detail/‘ you get the url for the release that track is on. Here is an example to clarify what I mean:

Let’s take the url http://ak-samples.beatport.com/items/volumes/volume2/items/1000000/0/70000/8000/700/70/1078779.LOFI.mp3 as an example. Here the id is ’1078779′. Now add that number after the aforementioned url and you get:http://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/track/detail/1078779.

But why stop here? Manual labor is always tedious :P . So how to make this more automated? If you are like me and value a good browser, you too are probably already using Google Chrome. If not, go grab it now. Anyway, Chrome has this nice support for custom search engines. This support is actually so good that it isn’t constrained only to search engines. So how can this feature be used in this case? Here’s how:

In Chrome click the monkey wrench icon in the toolbar right of the address bar. Select options from the menu that opens. Open the Basics tab from the Options dialog. Click the Manage button next to the default search engine drop down. Click ‘Add..’- or the ‘+’-button and type in these values:

Name: Beatport Releases (or whatever you like)
Keyword: bpr
URL: http://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/track/detail/%s

Now when you click ‘Add’ and close the opened dialogs and go to the address bar of the browser you can just type ‘bpr’ + the release number you are looking for, and Chrome opens the info page of this release in Beatport (e.g. for the aforementioned release type ‘bpr 1078779′ (without the hyphens)).

Mix Monday: Sparks – The ‘Seamless’ Mix

Time to continue what M-za started two weeks ago, this time with dnb flavours. If last monday mix was moody, this one is more on the cheery side. A mix that I downloaded for a bus journey from Tampere to Helsinki when going to Tallin for our company’s summer party. For me the mix was a really positive find as it is somewhat similar to what I always try to achieve in my mixes: A nice journey into the world of dnb with nice tracks and smooth, nearly seamless blends. The mix I’m talking about here is by Sparx and it is entitled ‘Seamless Mix’ (not the most innovative name for the set, but the contents well make up for it. You can grab the mix from Dogs on Acid forum, or download it straight from Mediafire.

Tracklist:

01. Enter Shikari – Juggernauts (Nero remix)
02. Brookes Brothers vs Futurebound – Dawn Treader
03. Imogen Heap – Headlock (High Contrast full remix)
04. Logistics – Cascades of Colour
05. Dub Tau – Ready Done
06. Benny Page – Turn Down The Light
07. London Elektricity – Strangest Secret In The World
08. Pish Posh – Corrupt Cops (Evol Intent)
09. Logistics – Shooting Star
10. Cyantific – Can’t Let Go
11. Bachelors Of Science – Strings Track (Apex remix)
12. London Elektricity – Great Drum N Bass Swindle (Logistics remix)
13. High Contrast – Return Of Forever
14. Matrix & Futurebound – Strength2Strength
15. The Ian Carey Project – Get Shakey (Matrix & Futurebound Nip & Tuck remix)
16. Underworld – Born Slippy (London Elektricity remix)
17. Xample & Lomax – Contra
18. Zinc ft Eksman – Drive By Car
19. High Contrast – Made It Last Night

Concussion Black & White

Interesting things happening later today, as the Concussionists will be serving music to crowds with quite a wide spectrum. I will be taking care of the darker stuff at Kolina-Produktio: Prison Break -party that is held at Vastavirta-klubi here in Tampere. Will be spinning only the darkest dnb tracks from my collection. Needless to say, it’s going to be heavy!

At the same time M-za will be hosting the opening event of his brand new “Funkin’ Up Your Wednesday” club at 1bar, downtown Tampere. As you can tell from the name, the atmosphere there is going to be much lighter and more laid back. The club is one of a kind as it is the first and only nu funk club in Finland!

If you are a friend of proper good music, you don’t want to miss these two! See you on the spot!

Monday mix – Moody Finns

I’m going to start a new thing at this blog right from this monday. I’m gonna post every monday when we do not have Concussion show @ Nubreaks.com one mixtape and one tune for your listening pleasure to fill up the cap between the radio shows.

I’m gonna start this thing ofcourse with stuff from Finland. The tune and the mix are really moody and sometimes even dark. The TUNE of the week is pure dubstep-gold and comes ofcourse from our trusted producer friends from Tampere – Vesicle. Their brand new track called “We are Lost” just made my monday. The tune got amazing atmosphere made by nice female lyrics, chill guitar samples and ofcourse Vesicles trademark “mörköläskibasso” as Stinks put it (meaning something like fat-spooky-bass“) . We are Lost is going to be realeased from Paradise Lost in near future. Gotta say that this one is going to be played at next weeks Concusssion dubstep special ;)

The MIX of the week is also from Finland. But the thing about it is that not only the DJ is from Finland but also all the tracks are from Finland. This drum’n'bass mix is also really moody and dark. I have been listening it a lot lately. The mix contains 10 great tracks from finnish producer called Furi Anga. You may have heard his tracks for example at finnish extreme travelling show Madventures. If you are interested about the soundtracks go and check out this page. The mix is made by DJ Wispy (who btw. was guest at Concussion show few months ago). I think that the tags what Furi Anga has made at his soundcloud will give you the best picture about what you gonna get.

minimal shadybrain translation silk deep dark melancholic

So here you are, hope you will enjoy! Remember also to tune in on next weeks monday at seven o’clock as usually.
